Communicative Seating – ABChairs by Roeland Otten
From Dutch Design Week 2010, we knew that another trend furniture of this year is furniture inspired by typography. ABChairs are one of typography furniture that was presented there. Designed by graphic designer Roeland Otten, each chair represents a letter of the alphabet. The chair is an alphabet to sit on and a series of chairs to form words with. It consist a series of 26 typographic chairs that can be arranged to form words.
Roeland Otten is a provoker and an innovator designer that never shy of looking for new ways to tell a story and making a statement. Actually, ABChairs are one of his dreams after finished from school at Design Academy Eindhoven. He has spent 10 year for creating these communicative seating. The ABC chairs are quite lightweight, fragile and sustainable for outdoors use. The prototypes are made of lacquered MDF, however the designer intends to produce them using rotational moulding of LDPE plastic during their manufacture.
The smaller size ABChairs would also be applicable for children’s interiors, like libraries and schools. It would be available very soon. At the moment the limited editions of these chairs can be bought upon request and I hope Otten will find a manufacturer soon to make plastic versions.
