Delicate Farquar Lake Residence by ALTUS Architecture + Design

Having won the 2009 RAVE (Residential Architects Vision and Excellence) Awards, Award by AIA Minnesota and Minneapolis / St. Paul Magazine, 2009 Star Tribune Home of the Month Award, Altus has thought that the porous design of the home is the active lifestyle of the client and the desire for connectivity to the ground from all spaces.

Designed for a narrow site, with trees on the shore of a lake, this young family wanted to develop games and outdoor gardens at the same time take advantage of views of the lake. The concept organizes public and private spaces in two forms covered with wood, connected by a glass hall containing the access. The broker becomes an open access between the garage and patio overlooking the lake, allowing the flow of air and activities through the center of the house toward the lake.

This connection indoor / outdoor flooring is reinforced by the blue continuous spaces connecting the front and rear. The paneled wings of the house alight on the “cropping” blue rock, which extends the natural grade of the entry, tying the house to the ground.

A series of monolithic bluestone is extending from the terrace overlooking the lake to the coast. A metal plane’s wings enveloping dark wood in the form of walls and ceiling, creating a sculptural roof for the house. At the west end of this minimalist house, the metal wall is perforated by a series of windows that let the light at the same time act as screens the view of neighbors. The floor to ceiling windows in the space / dining room and master bedroom framed views of the land and lake, and let in the northern light. The house fits the site during all seasons.
